My first year being a Grad student, an update :)

At E. Franklin Street, UNC
Having completed my first year at UNC, I thought its time that I could share some updates at my end.

The first year, I must say was very engaging to adjust with academics and a different style of living life. There is a stark difference between academics here and during my under-grad in India. The application related approach to academics followed here is what I believe makes you stronger conceptually.

The time I have spent here has been rewarding to give me the first hand experience at research. Thinking about a problem all day and then may be by sheer luck getting an insight to solving an aspect of it is truly exhilarating! And the best part is that you get a chance to let the world know  your t(iny)-bit contribution, that gives you a sense of accomplishment! (if I don't sound loud.)

As the academic maxim goes "Publish or Perish". I did my part not to be on the latter. I churned out my way working as a Research Assistant at Renaissance Computing Institute(RENCI) to make my first publication in an international workshop (IPDPS 2013) that took place in Boston this May.

Porterfield, Allan K., Stephen L. Olivier, Sridutt Bhalachandra, and Jan F. Prins. "Power Measurement and Concurrency Throttling for Energy Reduction in OpenMP Programs." In Proceedings of the 2013 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing Workshops and PhD Forum, pp. 884-891. IEEE Computer Society, 2013.

Its not just that I have dug my way through only books(e-books to be more contemporary) this entire year. I got a lot of opportunities to experience the sought after American holidays. With trips to New York experiencing White Christmas at Time Square, 4th of July at Washington D.C, the beach at Charleston, SC etc.

Throughout my Summer Internship during which I continued my research at RENCI  till now, I am on my hunt to get my first first-authorship! :)

Will keep you posted.
